You will never guess what happened today... I'm having issues with my computer. The stupid noise started again. But there's more... (and that's without mentioning that our dishwasher also broke down yesterday!)
I opened the case to see if a wire was catching on a fan or something, but no. The fans seemed to be in order. In fact, the noise was coming from the hard drives.
What a bad decision it was to phone technical support... The advisor was very sarcastic and plain rude, and he hanged up on me. He wouldn't listen to me at all, and just ordered a new fan. Why?!
I know quite a bit about computers, so to have that incompetent !#%& telling me that the hard-drive is inside the case and it doesn't have a fan, and that an internet browser looks like a blue letter 'E' on the desktop, was unbearable! I felt like telling him where to go, but I'm too polite for my own good.
He said he'll book an engineer's visit when the fan arrives, and when I asked whether it would be quicker for me to take it to the shop, he laughed and hanged up!
I got very upset. I didn't ask for this! He is a customer service representative, so it's his duty to be patient and courteous. Who gave him the right to assume that because I'm a female, I must be retarded?!
I phoned straight back to make a complaint. The matter was referred to their manager, who will listen to our recorded conversation and take this further.
I had it with HP - I thought they were a reliable and trustworthy company. The after sales service is appalling! I hate my PC, it's the worst one I've ever had! I've had nothing but problems with it, and I'm fed up. >:( I should've built it myself again; how stupid of me was it to assume that you get what you pay [a lot of money] for! I'm going to write them a letter and demand action.
Why couldn't it happen AFTER I completed my pupillage applications?! At least this time I backed up all the data, I guess... But at the moment, pupillage apps are the last thing on my mind! >;( (< angry smiley)

Oh boy. You've not had much luck with your PC, eh? When my HP monitor started squealing at me last year, I called HP to get them to take it back... I got cut off after the first guy 'transferred' me. So I just shipped it the hell back to Amazon who replaced it without question. HP are a joke.
It must be very frustrating when you're in the middle of pupillage apps.
So the guy has just ordered a new CPU fan when you think the noise is coming from the HD?
What a mess. :-(
I always use RAID for my local hard drives...because I crash them a lot... and then I replace them, ship the broken hard drive to the manufacturer, get a replacement and don't lose data.
Of course, this means I have two drives in the computer and one spare on desk!
To be honest, Andro, when I was in the process of purchasing my desktop I was warned off HP for their pound for pound unreliability. I went for a custom build in the end, and have been entirely happy with it for the last three years.
Have you got a Laptop? Mine has been well worth the purchase recently, given that I am now loathe to save ANYTHING AT ALL to a Data Stick. At least then you can take your stuff with you should you want to dip into it of a lunch hour or something.
Thank GAWD you backed up all your pupillage apps!!!!!! ( *sigh of relief*)
Michael, yeah, it's all messed up. I hate HP even more now!
HPL, after losing almost everything when my previous pc packed up, I now back everything up regularly on an external drive. But still - this unreliability is a bit inconvenient!
Minxy, my custom PC lasted me about 4 years. It's still working great, after I repaired it and gave it to my parents. ;D
I don't have a laptop *yet*, because I don't really need it at the moment. If I ever get pupillage, I want to get one of those tiny laptops to carry around with me everywhere!
I bought a 1TB external drive with my current pc, having lost pretty much everything; I'm never losing any data again (I just have to remember to back up regularly)! :D
Michael's back-up tip:
Try Microsoft Live Mesh (backs up to the cloud ('remote desktop') and other PCs/mobile devices and best of all, it's all kept in sync.
*AND*
For quick one-button backups try MS synctoy 2.0 to create paired folder relationship on external disk etc. Can never bring myself to trust a completely automated back-up service - pushing that button comforts me. :-)
Loving the 'those tiny laptops' quip Andro! AKA 'netbooks' eh? :p
You mean there's software to back up your stuff?! I'm just kidding; but I've always backed up manually. I'm curious about the synctoy now.
Netbooks - that's what I meant! Didn't realise there was a proper term for them; I still prefer mine. :D
